Start with temperature, end with removal

Every masking choice is bounded by two events: the hottest moment of your process and the moment someone removes the mask. A material must survive the first without melting, shrinking or baking its adhesive into the surface — and then leave cleanly at the second. Judge every candidate against both, because a mask that survives the oven but leaves residue has still failed.

As a rule of thumb across our range: washi and crepe paper live in refinish territory up to roughly 120°C; PVC film and EPDM rubber are comfortable to about 150°C; green PET film tape and die-cuts run to about 204°C; high-temperature silicone plugs and caps ride out repeated 250°C cycles; polyimide film reaches about 260°C; and aluminum foil handles thermal spray, where the question is particle impact rather than air temperature.

Match the mask to the feature, not just the process

Holes and threads want molded parts — plugs seal by compression and protect the geometry itself, which tape flat-out cannot do. Flat faces and gently curved surfaces are tape territory: film for ovens, paper for refinish. Repeating small features justify die-cut shapes that operators place in one motion. Large areas call for film sheeting, and irregular castings or internal bores are where liquid maskant earns its place. Most real parts need two or three of these at once — that is normal, and it is why kits exist.

Single-use versus reusable is a cost question

A silicone plug costs more than a strip of tape and is cheaper than a month of tape. Reusable parts win whenever the same feature repeats across a production run: divide the plug price by 50–100 cycles and compare that with tape price plus the labour of cutting and placing it every cycle. Tape wins for one-offs, short runs and geometry that changes week to week. The crossover comes faster than most buyers expect.

The mistakes we see most often

Taping threads instead of plugging them — paint wicks along the tape edge into the first thread and the assembly line finds out later. Using refinish paper tape in a powder oven — it chars and welds itself to the part. Choosing masks by unit price instead of cost per masked part. And skipping a sample test: every recommendation on this page is a starting point, and a ten-minute trial on your actual line beats any chart, including ours.
