How to specifySilicone Masking Plugs.
What is a silicone masking plug?
A silicone masking plug is a molded, tapered or stepped silicone part pressed into a hole or thread to block paint, powder or plating solution from entering during a coating process. Unlike tape, plugs are reusable across many production cycles.
How do I choose the right plug size?
Measure the hole diameter and depth, then choose a plug with a taper range that spans the hole slightly larger than nominal — a good plug seals under light compression, not by exact diametrical fit. For blind holes, confirm depth so the plug fully seats without bottoming out.
Which silicone grade should I use?
General-purpose silicone covers most powder coating ovens up to around 200°C. For higher-temperature curing or repeated high-cycle use, specify a high-temperature silicone grade rated to 250°C or above.
