Why can't I use regular masking tape for blasting?

Standard powder coating or painting masking tape is designed to survive heat and chemical exposure, not direct abrasive impact. Grit or bead media will cut through thin tape backings almost immediately, exposing the area you meant to protect.

What makes blasting tape different?

Blasting tape uses a heavier rubber-based cloth or reinforced backing specifically built to absorb repeated media impact without tearing, while still removing cleanly once the blast step is done.

Do I need blasting tape and coating tape for the same part?

Often yes - blasting tape protects the area during surface prep, then it's removed and replaced with the appropriate coating masking tape (silicone plug, PET tape, etc.) for the actual finishing process.
